Stevie Ray Vaughan


1954년 달라스에서 태어난 스티비 레이 본은
10대 때 데이빗 보위에 인정을 받아 그 만남을 계기로
일렉트로 팝 전성시대에 새로운 타입의 블루스맨으로
데뷔하여 음악계에 충격을 주었다.

특히,90년 여름에 막을 내린 그의 짧은 생애 최후의
스테이지는 에릭 클랩튼의 게스트로서 였는데 클랩튼은
"입을 딱 벌리고 구경할 수밖에 없었다"고 그 스테이지에
관해서 후일담을 이야기하고 있다.

얼마전 지미 헨드릭스의 누이가 한국의 모음악지와의
전화 인터뷰를 통해 지미 헨드릭스의 영향을 받은 아티스트
중 가장 뛰어나다고 생각되는 인물로 바로 스티브 레이본을
지적한 바 있다. 백인으로서 흑인의 음악인 블루스를 자신의
기타로 완벽하게 표현할 수 있었던 레이본은 정말 아이러니
하게도 36세에 헬기사고로 자신이 가장 존경했던 지미
헨드릭스처럼 너무 빨리 세상을 뜨고 말았다.

그의 연주의 특징은 힘이 넘쳐흐르고, 높은 감각적 파장을
만들어내어 감성적인 리듬을 자연스럽게 만들어내는데 있다.
특히 그의 연주의 세계는 초기 블루스에서 현재에 이르는
블루스 기타의 종합판이라고 할 수 있다.
